A Year of Work Throughout Portsmouth and the Tri-State
Along with projects in Ashland, Kentucky, Huntington, West Virginia, and neighboring cities and towns throughout Ohio, Sun Sign Company made a particularly visible mark in Portsmouth this year.
The company’s largest project to date involved three massive building signs for Centrus Energy at the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant property, commonly known locally as the A-Plant. The project included name recognition and logos on the Centrus building and a massive 20' wide, 38' high American flag mounted vertically from the top of the same building. These projects demonstrated quick turnaround on complex signage at heights near 100' that required significant engineering and approvals. With the help of the Sun Sign Company team, its partners and a team of in-house engineers at Centrus, Sun Sign Company delivered on-time and on budget.
Closer to downtown, Sun Sign Company has been contributing to the Portsmouth Riverfront beautification project, with some signs already installed and others still being completed. Its work can also be seen at Daehler Funeral Home, another business recognized by the Chamber this year, and at Desco Federal Credit Union locations, including the new South Point branch and the newly remodeled Portsmouth drive-through at Fourth and Washington streets.
Other completed and ongoing projects include:
- Scioto County Public Library: Signage for the South Webster and Wheelersburg locations.
- United Energy Workers Health Care: Signage at three locations.
- Southern Ohio Museum: Multiple projects throughout the year, with additional work ongoing.
- Portsmouth’s new City Building on the Esplanade: Completed and continuing signage work.
Beyond these projects, the company fabricated and installed replacement sign faces for customers throughout the region, including locations in Northern and Eastern Ohio, and deep into Kentucky and West Virginia. Restaurant installation work included Smalls Sliders in South Point, Charley's Cheesesteaks in Circleville, and the new Dairy Queen in Ironton.
The company also operates a full print shop, producing printed graphics and banners for customers including multiple G&J Pepsi locations, Southern Ohio Museum and more. Its two boom trucks, one 60' the other 110', support both sign work and crane lifts for air-conditioning, building trusses, refrigeration units, and other equipment.
More Than a Familiar Landmark
Many people know Sun Sign Company’s work from the entrance sign at Greater Portsmouth Regional Airport. For that project, the company fabricated a scaled-down Gulfstream jet from sheet aluminum and mounted it atop a 30-foot pylon sign.
That distinctive project attracted considerable attention, but it represents just one example of the company’s capabilities. From custom aluminum fabrication and large building signs to illuminated displays, printed graphics, and complex installations and sign removals, Sun Sign Company brings design, craftsmanship, and problem-solving together to help customers make a lasting impression.
