Everything You Need to Know About Quality Sign Faces

The sign face is what your customers see first—and remember. At Sun Sign Company, sign face design and fabrication aren’t just services—they’re at the core of what we do. From small-town storefronts to towering highway signs, we craft custom faces for businesses across Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia with a sharp eye for quality, durability, and design.

Whether you're upgrading a large pole sign, refreshing a monument sign, or ordering a fresh face for a cabinet sign  that’s seen better days, our in-house production ensures consistent quality, faster turnaround times, and a finished product that holds up to time and weather.

What Is a Sign Face?

The sign face is the visible surface—typically acrylic or polycarbonate—that carries the printed, painted, or translucent graphics. It’s where branding, color, lighting, and readability all come together.

Why Sign Face Construction Matters

A poorly built face fades fast, warps in the wind, and cracks under pressure. We’ve seen it firsthand—buckled acrylic, faded vinyl, brittle corners. We start with premium materials and proven fabrication methods to deliver a longer life, brighter appearance, and stronger ROI.

What Sets Sun Sign Company Apart

  • Heavy-Duty .177 Polycarbonate Standard: While many shops cut corners with .150", we commonly use .177" thickness for flat faces. That added strength boosts wind resistance and impact durability—critical for high-elevation pole signs and Ohio Valley weather.
  • In-House Fabrication: Unless a vacuum-formed face is specified, we build faces in our own facility for tight quality control, quicker lead times, and direct accountability.
  • High-Performance Films, Inks & Paints: We select translucent vinyls and digital processes for UV resistance and colorfastness. Second-surface graphics are available to protect art from abrasion and vandalism.
  • Built for Your Lighting Method: Whether LED prism-lens modules or legacy fluorescent, we optimize diffusion and density for even brightness and minimal hotspots or shadows.

Types of Sign Faces We Produce

  • Flat Polycarbonate & Acrylic Faces: Ideal for illuminated cabinets and pole signs; available with first- or second-surface graphics.
  • Pan-Formed Faces: Vacuum-molded for depth and rigidity; adds visual dimension and wind resistance.
  • Embossed & Routed Faces: Higher-end looks with raised lettering or custom textures.
  • Printed Film & Vinyl Overlay: Durable color graphics for full coverage or spot lettering.
  • Printed Fabric (Tensioned) Faces: Excellent for very large, elevated signs where lightweight flexibility and high-visibility printing are key.
  • LED-Ready Sign Faces: Engineered to work in harmony with LED systems for optimal glow and efficiency.

Built to Handle the Real World

Weather is no joke in our region. We build faces to withstand high winds, temperature swings, and UV exposure—conditions we know well after decades serving the hills of Kentucky, the river towns of Ohio, and the mountain corridors of West Virginia. Many of our sign faces stay in service for 10+ years, even in tough conditions.

FAQs: Clear, Even, Readable Sign Faces—Solved

Why does my illuminated sign show bright “hotspots” or uneven lighting?

Hotspots or dim areas usually come from LED spacing, insufficient diffusion, or graphics not designed for backlighting. We fix these by re-mapping LED layout, adding reflective baffles, and using LED-rated translucent films or second-surface printing. The result: smooth, even illumination across your entire face.

My sign looked great on screen, but it’s hard to read from the road — what’s wrong?

That’s common. Designs that work on a monitor don’t always translate at distance. We correct this by tuning letter height, font weight, spacing, and color contrast for readability at driving speed and viewing distance. Whether refreshing your existing layout or starting from scratch, we build for legibility first.

How much do color choices affect visibility?

More than most people realize. Contrast drives legibility day and night. High-contrast pairings like black on white or white on deep blue read best. If your brand palette is lower-contrast, we preserve your colors but add subtle outlines, halos, or background adjustments so your message still stands out under light.

My whites look yellow, or some graphics glow brighter than others — can that be fixed?

Yes. Yellowing or uneven brightness often comes from aged materials, UV exposure, or outdated lighting. We inspect the face and illumination, then balance densities by layering films, adjusting ink laydown, or upgrading to modern LEDs. A lighting refresh and new graphics can restore clean, even color throughout the display.

What if wind, impact, or age are concerns with my existing cabinet?

If your cabinet structure is sound, we can fabricate a new face, optimize lighting, and strengthen materials to extend life. We often spec .177" polycarbonate, pan-formed, or tensioned faces for added rigidity and wind resistance—especially on high-rise or weather-exposed signs. It’s a cost-effective way to get a “new sign” look without replacing the entire structure.
